NPC sororities want every Potential New Member to be informed about their options for joining a sorority. At the completion of the recruitment process, students who are invited to join an NPC organization will be asked to sign a membership recruitment acceptance binding agreement (MRABA).  The MRABA is a binding contract with the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC).  All NPC member organizations pledge to follow the terms of the contract.

During the fall informal recruitment (Continuous Open Bidding) students are only asked to sign the MRABA after they’ve been invited by an NPC sorority to join their organization. By signing the MRABA a student indicates:

  • they are willing to accept a bid from the sorority
  • they understand that after signing the MRABA, they cannot accept any other bid until the beginning of of the next primary recruitment process (meaning they could leave the sorority they’ve just joined but can’t join a different NPC sorority until spring formal recruitment)
  • they have never been initiated into an NPC sorority
  • they understand that if they join the NPC sorority and choose to become an initiated member of that sorority, they cannot join another NPC member organization, regardless of any
    circumstance.

During the spring formal recruitment participants are asked to sign the MRABA after they’ve competed the final round (Preference Round) of recruitment. By signing the MRABA at the conclusion of the Preference Round a student indicates:

  • they are willing to accept an invitation to membership (“bid”) from any sorority they list
  • they will rank each sorority in the order of my preference for receiving a bid
  • if they attended a sorority’s Preference event, and I would not accept a bid from that sorority, they know they do not have to rank that sorority.
  • that if they choose to rank fewer sororities, they might not receive a bid
  • that after they submit the MRABA they cannot change their rankings and cannot add or delete any sororities to their rankings
  • that if they do not receive a bid from any sorority they ranked, they understand they are eligible to join any sorority later, through the COB process.
  • they understand that not all sororities will recruit through COB
  • that if they do receive a bid from a sorority they ranked, but choose not to accept that bid, they understand they are not eligible to join any other sorority on this campus until the start of the next primary Recruitment (not until the next formal recruitment)
  • they have never been initiated into an NPC sorority and understand that if they join an NPC sorority and choose to become an initiated member of that sorority they cannot join another NPC member organization, regardless of any circumstances.

Regardless of the time a student signs the MRABA, they should not sign this binding contract if they have questions or need further explanations of any of the items listed. If you have any questions or need further support regarding your sorority selection, please email ofsa@echo.rutgers.edu.
